Mark Shook — Cybersecurity Leader | 25+ Years in Convenience Store Technology

I’m a cybersecurity manager with more than 25 years of experience in the convenience store (c-store) technology space, where I’ve grown from hands-on systems administration into security program design and leadership. My career has spanned the full stack — from fuel dispensers and point-of-sale terminals on the store floor to cloud-native security operations in the enterprise.

I’ve spent years deep in the Microsoft ecosystem, building and leading security programs across Azure and Microsoft 365, Microsoft Defender EDR, Microsoft Sentinel, and Purview/DLP. I write detection and hunting logic in KQL, automate response with SOAR and Logic Apps, and shape data pipelines with Cribl.io. My earlier engineering roots — Exchange Server, VMware, LogRhythm, VBScript, and PowerShell — still inform how I approach automation and problem-solving today, and I stay current by working hands-on with modern AI tools like Claude and vibe coding.

On the identity and access side, I design and enforce Conditional Access, manage endpoint and server environments, and secure remote access through Netskope, SSE, and ZTNA. I also bring practical, industry-specific expertise with PDI Enterprise and Fuel Pricing, NCR/Radiant Systems POS, Verifone POS/PIN pads, and fuel dispensers — plus the fundamentals that keep operations running: vulnerability management, system backups, networking and Wi-Fi, and small data center power and cooling.

I hold a B.S. in Information Security and Computer Forensics (2012), and today I focus on what I enjoy most: designing, implementing, and leading security programs that protect complex, distributed retail environments.
